Here’s Why You Should Take a Holistic Approach to Your Pet’s Health Care

Here's Why You Should Take a Holistic Approach to Your Pet's Health Care featured image

In a previous article, we ran through the lowdown on what holistic pet care is. This time, we’re sharing with you the benefits of holistic pet care!

  1. Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Pets, just like humans, fall sick occasionally. And like all visits to a medical practitioner, said medical practitioner would usually prescribe some meds to treat our (or that of our pet’s) symptoms. You’ve got a cough? Here’s some cough syrup that taste absolutely horrible but will surely help to clear up the phlegm in your throat eventually soon!

But the holistic pet care approach is a guiding philosophy that tackles the root cause of an ailment to prevent it from happening again in the future. It looks at the entire picture of what’s going on with your pet. Instead of prescribing antibiotics to treat your pet’s UTI, a holistic vet looks at what has caused UTI in your pet.

  1. Keeps Your Pet Healthy Naturally

Holistic pet care also sees the entire body as greater than the sum of its parts. This means that in order to treat a specific illness, the holistic vet evaluates the overall wellness of your pet. They consider your pet’s diet, nutritional intake, physical wellbeing, emotions and environment.

Making sure that your cat or dog is eating healthier foods and foods that are biologically appropriate will go a long way in ensuring that your pet lives a long, healthy and happy life. Some alternative but more natural treatments such as homeopathy, massage and acupuncture work just as effectively as conventional medical procedures! Poking needles into your pet seems like a pretty odd thing to do, but you’d be surprised by how effectively acupuncture can be used to relieve pain and strengthen your pet’s immune system.

Herbal medicines can even help to enhance your pet’s nutrition and improve its body synergy. Ultimately, holistic care nurtures and supports an animal’s own healing process.

  1. More Effective When Treating Chronic Illness

Chronic use of conventional medicine is often more expensive than alternative treatments. Besides, side effects from the consumption of these meds are really common amongst pets. This means that more meds are used to treat these other afflictions, leading to even more side effects. When it comes to chronic illnesses, perhaps it’d be good to consider a holistic pet care approach which revolves around more natural remedies and therapies.

  1. Gives Hope to the Terminally Ill Pet

Some illnesses in animals are considered not treatable by conventional medical standards. But before you euthanize your pet, consider alternative treatments. There have been some pets that were diagnosed terminally ill but responded well to a holistic approach.

It is not 100% guaranteed that your pet would be completely cured of their illness just by seeking holistic treatments. However, there is the possibility that they can heal enough to coexist with their diseases comfortably and happily for a long time.

This is not to say that you should definitely choose holistic pet care over conventional pet care. Holistic pet care works remarkably well alongside mainstream pet care. Perhaps it’d be good to consider including it as part of your pet’s healthcare!
