In Singapore, there is a wide selection of dog foods to choose from for your dog. This may get confusing, especially for new dog owners. Some new owners let the pet shop make the decision for them by asking for recommendations. However, they may not make the best choice for your dog. Instead, they’d recommend a product that has a higher profit margin.

Owners should take the nutritional health and diet of their dogs in their own hands by reading up and doing research on what’s the best for them. Let us help you better understand what makes a good dog food so that he/she gets to live its best dog life!

A good dog food usually depends on 2 main factors. The raw ingredients and the manufacturer.

Why Are the Ingredients Important?

Raw ingredients are important as it is where the main nutrients come from and it’s basically what you’re paying for. Things to look out for when choosing the right dog food usually include grain or grain free formulas and by-products in the ingredient free formulas.

You can look out for these information on the packaging or the manufacturer website. The ingredient list will list all the ingredients that are used in order of the most to least. This means that the first ingredient in the list will be more than the next item on the list.

What are Grain Free Formulas?

Grain free dog food is any kind of dog food that doesn’t contain any wheat, corn, barley, oats, rye, rice and soy. Many owners have switched their dog’s diet over to a grain free one mainly because their dogs have had allergic reactions to specific kinds of grains such as wheat, soy and corn.

Grain free dog food contain less carbohydrates and more protein and animal fats than regular ones which makes it more digestible. There have also been claims of a grain free diet resulting in a ton of benefits such as enhanced immune function, shinier coats, healthier skin and better digestion, amongst others.

Good dog food that is grain free are considered a specialty diet which makes them a tad bit more expensive than their grain-based counterparts. If you’re wondering about switching your pup to a grain free diet, ask yourself this first: Is your dog doing well on its current diet?

If your answer is yes, it’s not necessary that you make that switch. I mean if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But if you’d like to make that switch anyway, it’d be good to slowly introduce grain free dog food into your dog’s diet. Do this by mixing it in a bit at a time. Gradually increase this amount over the course of the next few weeks to allow your canine to adjust to this new diet.

What are By-Products?

By-products are relatively uncommon in quality modern dog food but they do still appear once in a while to unsuspecting dog owners who do not check the ingredient list.

By-products are the other parts of the meat source that are left over after the parts intended for human consumption are removed.

Why is the Manufacturer Important?

Getting a good and reputable brand of dog food is important as they ensure that the quality of the dog food is not compromised by shady or cost cutting practices.

We usually recommend dog foods that are made under AAFCO’s regulations as they have certain health and safety standards to adhere to.

Other Factors to Consider When Choosing Good Dog Food

If your dog doesn’t eat the dog food, it’s not a good dog food. Palatability should also be put into consideration. You can increase palatability by adding in meal mixers or wet food but that would incur additional cost which will lead to my next point.

Budget or price is usually another top consideration most people have when it comes to choosing their dog food and this is also important. We know that many owners want to feed the best they can to their dogs but we recommend that you purchase the best that you can comfortably afford.

A good dog food does not have to be expensive, after all the law of diminishing returns does apply to dog food as well.

All in all, there is no one kind of food that is perfect for all dogs. That being said, it is vital that you do your own research on nutrition in order to provide the best and most well-balanced dog food for your dog.
