Absolute Holistic Air Dried Dog Food & Treats are the latest products distributed by B2K Pet Products Singapore. As there is not much information available on the Absolute Holistic Official website, so we will base this review on the information that were provided to us on the packaging of the product.
What is Air Dried Dog Foods
Most of us have heard about dehydrated, and even freeze-dried dog foods but what is the difference? All of them are raw food preservation methods with different pros and cons. Freeze-dried dog foods are made by removing the moisture in the foods via lowering the temperatures in a freezer while lowering the pressure as well. This causes the moisture to be removed while locking in nutrients and flavour. Freeze-dried machinery are very high tech compared to the other methods so they might be costly.
Dehydration removes moisture through applying low heat for a very long period of time thus slowing removing moisture. Due to the application of the low heat, some people do not consider dehydrated dog food to be completely raw however, most of the nutrients are still present in dehydrated foods.
Air Dried Dog Foods are made using evaporation instead of dehydration. There is no heat in evaporation so lesser nutrient loss as compared to dehydration but not as resource intensive to manufacture as compared to freeze-dried dog foods. There is no need to refrigerate or rehydrate your dog’s air dried food – You can enjoy the convenience of dry food, as well as the health benefits of a high quality diet with air-dried dog food! Simply scoop and feed however much your dog requires.
The Absolute Holistic Air Dried Dog Food & Treats comes in 4 flavours for the food and 4 flavours for the treats. Flavours include Lamb & Salmon, Venison & Beef, Blue Mackerel & Lamb and Chicken & Hoki. Upon closer inspection, the formulation of the ingredients and guaranteed analysis are very similar. From this we infer that the formulation for the treats and food are the same, just packaged in different weights.
Each pack of Absolute Holistic dog food comes in a 1kg size. If you’re afraid to commit, fret not – The treats come in 100g mini packs and are great for sampling. The formula is mostly meat based with named meat ingredients with high amounts of protein compared to traditional dry kibbles. We have to say that we love the thought that was put into the packaging. Since the humidity in Singapore is so high, it’s very important to ensure that your air-dried dog food comes into contact with as little moisture as possible.
These metal lined bags are great at keeping moisture and light away from the product, ensuring freshness for longer! The shelf life on these bags we have is dated with an expiry of Y2020, which is considerably long, too!
Look, Texture, Smell
There is a strong meaty smell when you open the bag. Dogs are sure to like it. Even when the food is left outside for more than a few days, the meaty smell is still there when you place your nose close to the food.
Absolute Holistic Air Dried Dog Food & Treats comes in small flat squares with an average size of about 1cm by 1cm. Absolute Holistic Air Dried Dog Food & Treats are easy to tear and break apart. They are not hard to chew, so we imagine it should be perfect for young or senior dogs!
Ease of Feeding
Each bag of Absolute Holistic food also comes with a convenient scoop! We really dislike guessing games, and we suppose you do too. We always have pet parents asking us about feeding guidelines and how much food a “cup” constitutes so this is great for portioning the right amount of dog food for meal time!
A Deeper Look
Absolute Holistic Air Dried Dog Food conforms to AFFCO for all life stages.
Taking a quick look at the blue mackerel & lamb formula.
Lamb, Blue Mackerel, Lamb Liver, Lamb Lung, Vegetable Glycerine, Salmon Oil, Dried Chicory, Parsley, Green Lipped Mussel, Flaxseed, Kelp, Mixed Tocopherols, Vitamins & Minerals (Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Iron, Zinc, Vitamin E, Copper Sulphate, Selenium, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Manganous Oxide, Vitamin B2, Biotin, Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin D3, Vitamin K, Folic Acid)
The blue mackerel & lamb formula is quite impressive with mostly meat in the first 5 ingredients which are in bold. Absolute Holistic claims that all meats are 100% sourced from free-range farms and the oceans of New Zealand.
Ingredients highlighted in green are the various supplements that manufactures include to value-add their products. We will do a quick run down of the list below.
- Salmon Oil for Omega Fatty Acids.
- Dried Chicory is for Inulin, a flavour enhancer and/or pre-biotic.
- Parsley, Absolute Holistic claims it’s for fresh breath, a quick search show that it’s true.
- Green Lipped Mussel for Glucosamine and Chondrotin
- Flaxseed for Omega Fatty Acid
- Kelp for stimulating the thyroid gland and better skin & coat.
The vitamins & minerals in blue are added on to ensure that the food is balanced for regular feeding.
The 2 ingredients in orange are some form of preservatives. They are required for the food to be stored for long periods of time. Vegetable glycerine is commonly used as a preservative against mold. It is important to get pet foods with vegetable glycerine instead of just glycerine as glycerine could be derived from bio-fuels which is not good for dogs. Vegetable glycerine is made from vegetables which is better for dogs. Mixed Tocopherols are a family of vitamin E compounds naturally found in vegetable oils, nuts, fish and leafy green vegetables is also used as another preservative.
Our initial impressions of Absolute Holistic Air Dried Dog Food is that it seems to be a good option for air dried raw product. The formula is mostly meat based with named meat ingredients with high amounts of protein compared to traditional dry kibbles. We recommend pet parents to try this food to see if your dogs like it!
